King David of Israel wrote the 51st psalm after the prophet Nathan called him out for his adultery with Bath-Sheba and the murder of her husband to cover it up. It has traditionally been a song of repentance and a prayer for restoration of one's damaged faith. Hence, it's a perfect opener for our narrator's journey home from the brink of unbelief and apostasy.
