This album, Heresy, serves as a sequel to Orthodox. In many ways, it’s also an opposite to Orthodox. Where Orthodox is all about affirming the Christian faith and doctrines, Heresy tells the story of a man of faith who nearly falls away. It explores themes of self-righteousness, indulgence, temptation, questioning one’s faith, and what happens to the conscience when you let your guard down. It can also be viewed as the next phase in the history of the Church, and in some ways, it’s also my personal story. It asks uncomfortable questions, and portrays temptation in a way that most people don’t recognize it: beautiful, seductive, everything you’ve wanted. The songs follow the story of ‘the narrator,’ who begins this chapter in his life strong and confident in his faith. By the end, he wonders if we was ever really a believer to begin with, and if it even matters at all. At The Edge of Apostasy, the narrator has a decision to make, and it’s a difficult one.
I have intentionally stopped the story before these questions are resolved (they will be, in my next album). It stops short of a happy ending to leave room for you to think about it and wonder, “what if I’m the heretic?” I believe self-examination like that is a good thing once in a while.
So, I’ve set out to make a trilogy of albums. That trilogy began with Orthodox, and this is the second installment. I think it will parallel the original Star Wars saga, so if Orthodox is “A New Hope,” then Heresy is “Empire Strikes Back.” If you’re a giant nerd like me, you should understand.
